What it does

Sonic is a high-performance Layer 1 EVM-compatible blockchain that evolved from the Fantom Foundation, rebranded and relaunched in December 2024. It is designed for sub-second transaction confirmations and high throughput for DeFi and Web3 applications. S (previously FTM) is the native token for transaction fees, staking, and governance. Developers earn up to 90% of transaction fees generated by their applications via the Fee Monetization (FeeM) program.

How it works

Sonic retained Fantom's Lachesis asynchronous BFT consensus, which achieves finality in approximately 1 second without leader-based block production. The Sonic team completely rewrote the storage engine and execution environment to improve performance by 10x over original Fantom. The S token replaced FTM at a 1:1 ratio for all FTM holders. Sonic's FeeM program allows dApp developers to earn up to 90% of the gas fees generated by their users, creating strong developer incentives. The network targets 10,000+ TPS with sub-second finality while maintaining full EVM compatibility.

Problem it solves

Many EVM-compatible chains sacrifice decentralization for speed. Sonic delivers near-instant finality and high throughput while maintaining EVM compatibility that preserves the large Solidity developer ecosystem. The FeeM developer incentive program solves the problem of protocol revenue going entirely to validators β€” by sharing fees with dApp builders, it creates aligned incentives for ecosystem growth.

Key Differentiator

Up to 90% fee monetization for dApp developers combined with sub-second Lachesis BFT finality and a completely rewritten execution engine β€” creating the strongest developer revenue incentives of any EVM-compatible Layer 1.

Tokenomics

Supply Model
Inflationary (~15% annual increase until 2031, then ~1.5% ongoing; used for staking rewards and ecosystem growth)
Staking
Validators and delegators stake S tokens; staking rewards from inflationary emissions; APY varies
